Ruth’s Reverie and Other Ramblings

welcome to my world

It’s Birthday Month August 1, 2008

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. . . at least for the women on my side of the family.  That’s right folks: it’s Birthday Month!  I’m a little embarrassed to say how giddy I feel when August finally rolls around.  So, without further ado and in no particular order, here are 28 reasons why I think August is the best month ever:

1. My mom’s birthday is August 16 – Happy Birthday Mom!!!  This world certainly wouldn’t be the same without you!

2.  The Sturgis motorcycle rally is held every year the first week in August in Sturgis, South Dakota!  Whoo-hoo! Maybe I’ll buy myself a Hog for my BIRTHDAY (which just so happens to be in August.)

3.  August’s official flowers are the gladiolus and the poppy.  Beautiful flowers–especially the red ones!

4.  Frank “Tug” McGraw was born in August.  “Ya gotta believe” that without him the Mets and the Phillies wouldn’t be the same, not to mention the you’d have no Tim McGraw to croon out “It’s Your Love” or remind you to “Live Like You Were Dyin’.”

5.  The 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing begin this month.  08.08.08

6.  My sisters’ birthdays are in August- Sarah on the 23rd , Bonnie on the 25th and Alia on the 26th. These are the best friends a girl could have, and you’re missing out if you don’t know them!

7.  It’s the last month of summer vacation, so it’s always a frenzy of getting the most summer fun in before school begins again.

8.  Napoleon Bonaparte was born in August–well maybe that doesn’t put my month in such a favorable light, but how can I fail to mention the little tyrant?  Besides, Paris has him to thank for most of the Louvre’s loot.

9.  August is National Immunization Awareness Month – is that a pro or a con?  Well, no matter your views on vaccinations, the promotion of Awareness is always a good thing, right?

10.  Davy Crockett’s birthday is in August.  Long live the coonskin cap!

11.  In common years no other month begins on the same day of the week as August.  Uh… just a fun fact for you trivia buffs.

12.  My brother-in-law, Andy, has a birthday this month, and he’s a pretty cool guy.

13.  The Council of Nicea ended in August with the adoption of the Nicean Creed defining and establishing the doctrine of the Trinity in the Christian church.

14.  Many of my wonderful friends from over the years have August birthdays: Heidi, Truth, Melisa’s mom, Jenny, Jeni, and Jennifer to name a few.   Happy Birthday, girls!

15.  August’s official birthstone is the peridot.  Green is my favorite color.  Go Green!

16.  Sean Connery’s B-Day is in August.  Where would James Bond be without that great Scott? (Though I must admit Pierce Brosnan is my favorite 007)

17.  MY Birthday is August 25th!!!!!

18.  Meriwether Lewis was born in August.  Poor Clark would have had to go exploring alone without him.

19.  Whitney Houston’s birthday is this month.  What would pop trivia be without ”I Will Always Love You” and “crack is wack!” I ask you?  (Dare I also mention that Madonna was born in August?  Nah, I guess I’d better not.)

20.  The cornerstone of the Statue of Liberty was laid in August.  Yes. The cornerstone.  Of one of our greatest symbols of liberty.  Thank you.

21.  August is the birth month of both Leo Tolstoy and Herman Melville –imagine life without Anna Karenina and Moby Dick!

22.  Orville Wright’s birthday is in August.  I bet Wilbur would have missed him as would have the entire field of aviation.

23.  In August 1959, Hawaii became a state.  Aloha!

24.  Lucille Ball was born in August.  Who doesn’t love Lucy?

25.  Alfred Hitchcock had an August birthday.  Scary movies today have nothing on The Birds and Psycho.

26.  August 1969 apparently marks the birth of the Internet, a fact for which we bloggers are eternally grateful.

27.  Annie Oakley’s birthday is in August.  Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show would have been nothing without her!  The culture of the American West has much for which to thank August.

28.  And finally, I turn 28 in August 2008.

Side note:  In the interest of giving fair representation, Bill Clinton, Barak Obama, Tipper Gore and Fidel Castro were born in August, as were Herbert Hoover, Mother Teresa, Neil Armstrong, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Ogden Nash and John Newton.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! early. I am a little jealous that all those great things happened in August. Anything great happen in November?
If you are feeling home sick you should make a trip this way. You could have a ten year highschool graduation reunion. :) and we would love to see you!

  3. Scott Says:

You forgot Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the reasons we won World War 2, not to mention Wyoming’s Primary Election is held in August (this year it falls on the 19th ;-) )

  4. collavoce Says:

Is is a female family requirement to have a birthday in August? :)

  5. Mary Ann Says:

Another reason August is great – my birthday was yesterday! Happy birthday to you coming up (the same day as my mom!).

  6. Mary Ann, that DEFinitely is another reason to celebrate! Happy Birthday!

Heather, yeah, I think it is a requirement for the girls in my family. So much so, that Matt’s wife had to share the same birthday as I have in order to make the cut. ;)

I didn’t forget Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Scott. I deliberately left them out. As significant as I know those events were and as important to the ending of the war, I just can’t bring myself to list something so devastating.

Hey Melisa, John was born in November, so I think it’s a pretty good month too! Wish I could come out–airfares are just too high at the moment, and we spent our travel budget in Christmas. :(

Chichi–nice of you to come out of your lurker status. I knew I’d get you one of these days!

  7. Sarah Says:

Hmmm, interesting that you have so many tributes to fame numbered in your “28,” but the true greats are all shoved together sharing number 6. Hmmm.

  8. Sarah Says:

AND we follow Tim McGraw in order of importance (okay, you may have been on track with that one)

  9. ruth Says:

Sarah, I DID say “in no particular order.” Of COURSE you are in the top two!

  10. Heidi Says:

I am never found commenting on these blogs, but I had to come out of hiding, to say that “yes, August is the best month of the year” Every year I think of all of your family during this time, especially since I fill in the gap in the girl’s birthdays ( = Happy Birthday!!
