This weekend John and I went to Lancaster County for our annual church couples’ retreat. We left on Thursday afternoon to meet up with the other couples at the Shady Maple Smorgasboard–yummy! Following dinner we retreated to the retreat site (I can’t remember the name of the hotel/conference center) and had a few activities. As I mentioned in my previous and ridiculously random post, John and I were selected to be contestants in the Newlywed Game. It turns out all our practicing was for naught considering two factors: 1. With questions like “Calculate the number of days you have been married, and find the square root of that number,” and “My wife’s kisses are like ___,” we didn’t really stand a chance. 2. The game turned out to be completely rigged–one couple had been given the questions beforehand and had memorized some incredibly detailed answers. (I have to add this example: One of the questsions was, “How many rolls of toilet paper do you go through in a month?” Their identical answer was, “Well, it depends on if we had chili or not.” Hilarious! That one really took us all off guard., and their answers kept getting more and more outrageous!) I thought it was funny, but a few people of a more competetive nature than I were not amused.
The Friday and Saturday sessions were really good with a lot of discussion and very helpful information. It was just nice to spend a weekend that was totally focused on our relationship. We had planned to have a scavenger hunt on Saturday; however, Friday brought us rain, sleet and snow in a large quantities, so the roads were not in great condition for a scavenger hunt. We spent our free time shopping instead. Amish country is a true shopper’s dream! We went to a few of the Amish shops and fell in love with one in particular. It was filled with handcrafted furniture, and the quality and detail were excellent. We found a bedroom set that we salivated over for a while. Maybe some day. . . We DID purchase some home-made preserves, peach and strawberry–double yummy! Overall, we had a great time on our couples’ retreat, and it’s good to be home sleeping in our own bed and showering in our own bathroom.
Which town were the shops in? We are planning a trip to Lanc. in June, and I’m trying to come up with stuff that a non-native (Mike) might enjoy! Sounds like you had a good time in spite of the less than perfect weather!

hey Ruth
Glad you guys had fun. Sorry to hear about your game though but seems as though you took it well, were you able to get rid of your head ache?
Talk to you soon.

HI Kris, We were in Intercourse, PA. No kidding. But there are tons of places to go and things to do in the whole county. If you are in the Intercourse area, I recommend the Country Kitchen. It’s a little village of shops with all kinds of neat things (leather store, knife store, silver/pewter, preserves, etc.)
Thanks, Melis, the headache finally did go away. I’ve been learning to live with them on a pretty regular basis, unfortunately! Of course, I haven’t learned not to complain about it yet.

Hey girl,
Sounds like lots of fun. My husbands extended family are all up in Lancaster County. It is a fun place to visit, although I’ve only been there once and that was for a funeral. (((shrug))) I love all the General Store-type shopping.
A couple’s retreat would be SO refreshing. With baby number 3 on the way, it’s going to be harder to get away. Enjoy every moment you have together, just the two of you!!

Hey, Ruthie! I’m glad you guys had fun. I’ve heard the high levels of oxygen in the Polish air are helpful for those suffering from headaches. On the other hand the incessant Polish chatter might negate its effects.
I love you and I pray for you!
